1970にオーストリアのヴァイトホーフェンに生まれる。6歳より音楽学校にてヴァイオリンを習う。1982年よりウィーン国立音楽大学にてウィーン・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団コンサートマスターのライナー・キュッヒルと助手のジェラ・スピトコワの下で研鑽を積む。これまでに、ヴォルフガンク・シュニーダーハン、ロバート・マスターズ、ヨゼフ・ルイッツ等に師事。1991年イギリスでの世界ユーディー・メニューイン国際コンクールで入賞し、メニューイン指揮でロンドン交響楽団と共演する。その後、ソリストとして世界有数のオーケストラと共演。ウィーン楽友協会ムジークフェラインやウィーン・コンサートハウス、東京文化会館などでも演奏している。
　1999年にミュンヘン弦楽四重奏団を設立し、2008年まで第1ヴァイオリニストを務める。2009年には、ウィーン交響楽団とウィーン・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団のメンバーらと弦楽四重奏団「Seraphin Quartett Wien」を結成。CD録音や欧州各地において演奏活動を精力的に行っている。
　ソリストや弦楽四重奏団として活動する一方で、コンサートミストレスとしても活躍。1994年ウィーン交響楽団のコンサートミストレスに就任。1997年2月からはリンツ・ブルックナー管弦楽団の、2000年からはミュンヘン放送交響楽団のコンサートミストレスを務める。2005年からはバイエルン州立交響楽団（ミュンヘン国立歌劇場管弦楽団）、ベルゲン・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団、トゥールーズ・キャピトル国立管弦楽団、グルベンキアン管弦楽団、ザルツブルク・モーツァルテウム管弦楽団などにおいてゲスト・コンサートミストレスとして活動。ウィーン・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団の日本ツアー、トヨタ・マスター・プレイヤーズ・ウィーンのメンバーとして来日している。後進の教育にも積極的に関わっており、2003年3月よりウィーン国立音楽大学で助手を務めている。
　オーストリア国立銀行収蔵の1742年ベネチア製S.セラフィン製作「エクス・ハマ」（Sanctus Seraphin "Ex Hamma"）のヴァイオリンを使用している。

Birgit Kolar was born in 1970 in Waidhofen/Ybbs (Austria) where, at the age of six, she began to study the violin at the local music school. From 1982 she pursued her study at the University of Music in Vienna with Rainer Küchl, a concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and his assistant teacher Jela Spitkova. She also worked with Wolfgang Schneiderhan in Lucerne, Robert Masters in London and Josef Luitz in Vienna.
In 1991 Birgit became a finalist and prize-winner at the International Yehudi Menuhin Competition in the UK.
Her commitment as a soloist and chamber musician brought her together with several European orchestras and conductors includes Yehudi Menuhin, Marcello Viotti, Josep Pons, Georg Mark, performing all over Europe, Asia and South America at many important venues such as the Wiener Musikverein, Wiener Konzerthaus, the Suntory Hall, Tokyo Bunka Kaikan.
Having been was the 1st violin of the "Münchner Streichquartett" established by her and members of the "Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks" from 1999 to 2008, Birgit Kolar founded the "Seraphin Quartett Wien" with members of Wiener Philharmoniker and Wiener Symphoniker.
Birgit Kolar has been a concertmistress for many orchestras such as Bruckner Orchestra Linz, Vienna Symphony Orchestra, and Munich Radio Orchestra. Since 2005 her career has continued as a guest concertmistress in European orchestras including the Bavarian State Orchestra (Munich State Opera), the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre Capitol de Toulouse, the Gulbenkian Orchestra Lisbon, the Mozarteum Orchester Salzburg, the Camerata Salzburg, the Orquestra Sinfónica de Castilla y León, and is regularly invited as a guest violinist by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
Since March 2003 she has also been an assistant-teacher at the University for Music in Vienna.
Birgit Kolar plays the violin 1742 from the "collection of rare instruments" owned by the National Bank of Austria.
